Vehicle Classification System
UTS has developed and patented the Intelligent Vehicle Identification System (IVIS™)
Design Benefits
- All digital, axle-based classification method; no moving parts or maintenance burden.
- Outperforms treadles, lasers and light curtains that require maintenance and are subject to inaccuracies
- Easy to install in new or existing roadways using proven specialized pavement cutting equipment and methods - Minimizes installation time and costs
- Non-intrusive IVIS™ sensors imbedded in the road surface that create invisible fields of energy of varying heights and intensities – Accurately and consistently classifies vehicles
- Multiple sets of sensors; increases accuracy and data confidence – Provides pre- and post-classification in a single lane environment
- A single technology applied in all roadways, both single lane and Open Road Tolling – Eliminates the need to purchase multiple systems to fit varying lane configurations
- Sensors can trigger the capture of VCARS license plate images and DVAS still images and track vehicle location – Improves the region-of-interest (ROI) capture of license plates as well as images to support transaction-level auditing
A significant advantage of the IVIS™ design comes from the static in-pavement sensors and computerized signal processing technology that accurately classifies, measures, and monitors vehicles. There is no need for electro-mechanical treadles, light curtains, or overhead laser sensors and their unique constraints and maintenance problems.
The reliability of UTS’s well-designed solution, focused especially on the tolling industry, is unrivalled by other systems. The static in-pavement sensors operate for the life of the pavement. Recalibrations are infrequent and are handled automatically by the system; periodic electrical and electronics maintenance ensure long-lived, accurate and reliable performance. Installation of the IVIS sensors involves cutting narrow slots in the toll lane pavement and installing the UTS pre-manufactured UTS sensors using a loop sealant. Installation and setup is very fast; lanes can be retrofitted overnight.
The success of the IVIS™ system has been proven in the heat and humidity of Miami, Florida, in the freezing cold and ice of Denver, Colorado, and in a variety of harsh environments in Austin, Texas, with equally consistent performance. Numerous consultants have documented 100% classification accuracy in acceptance testing. Internal tests at UTS have yielded classification accuracies of better than 99.97% in over 21,700,000 vehicle passes during commercial operation.
UTS IVIS™ is protected under numerous United States and foreign patents: US 5,614,894; US 6,864,804; US 7,015,827; US 7,071,840; US 7,136,828 B1; US 7,324,015; US 2008/0271907-A1; CA 2 139 577; and EP 0 649 553 B1. Other patents are pending. UTS IVIS™ is truly the state-of-the-art in vehicle classification technology today.
